Thank you so much for doing the Snow Work as we could call it. I believe we almost had 100% As I said last week, this really is the most important time of the year for learning. Some of the older children have already started to try and do journaling.
Journaling in preschool can be described in this way: The child draws a picture of something they want to write about. From the picture they form a sentence or two and attempt to write it down. They are encouraged to listen to the sound of the word and make an attempt to put the letters they hear onto the paper. They are permitted to use words from around the room, or we will even use very simple picture dictionaries. When you see the writing, it might not be perfect spelling but it is their best. It will continue to get better as they learn. Encourage them to write. Do not spell everything for them. Ask them,” how do you think it is spelled?” The children are all at different levels right now. We will be working with them where they are.
Example: I lk to pla bith mi frnd. I like to play with my friend.
A few things we will be learning:
Homework:
Tuesday: Print three samples of the letter you see in the copybook.
Make a snack with your child. Talk about the steps, and write them in the copybook.
Ex: Apples and peanut butter
Wednesday: Print three samples of the letter you see in the copybook
Play Dollar Store with your child. Give your child ten dollars. Cut ten pieces of white paper out and pretend it is real money. Label some toys or food with prices from $1.00 to $5.00 . Let your child pretend to shop. Remind them that they only have ten dollars. Make something they really like for $5.00 and it will be a great learning experience to see how they handle themselves when they run out of money. Comment in the copybook.
Thursday: Print three samples of the letter you see in the copybook.
In the copybook name something that your child has a hard time sharing.

A few things we will be learning:
Printing: I am sending home a guide for you to use when the children are asked to print a letter for homework. Please go by it exactly. Also please make sure your child is holding their crayon using the correct grip. The children might fight you on this a little bit, but keep reinforcing the correct method. If they begin with bad habits, it will be extremely difficult to change it later and will lead to difficulty printing and using cursive later in their lives.
Each evening I will give the children one letter to print. Please only let your child print three or four letters each night. They should not do an entire page. They are not developmentally ready to do this, and we want them to enjoy printing, not think of it as a chore. Do not hold their hands, or make dots, just let them try their best. You can do a few on another piece of paper to model it, but make sure you use the guide. The Three-Year-Old Children might have difficulty. Do not push them, it will come with time. The Four Year Old Group should be much better. Please leave the guide in a place that anyone who is working with homework can find it easily. (over for homework)
Homework:
Monday - Print the letter E three or four times as seen in the guide.
Get ready for your Christmas Show and Tell tomorrow.
Tuesday- Print the letter F three or four times as seen in the guide.
Play this game with your child and comment on how your child did in the copybook.
Where Does It Belong? Name various items you buy at the supermarket and ask your child to tell you where it belongs in the house. Ex: milk, laundry detergent, eggs, frozen meat, cereal, ……. You can also let your child ask you where things go.
Wednesday- Print the letter H three or four times as seen in the guide.
Using objects such as cereal, or pasta ask your child to count out a certain number of pieces and give them to you. Give me 4 Cheerios, go up to ten or higher if your child is having fun.

Dear Parents,
I wish all of you a Happy and Healthy New Year!
I would also like to say that you should not be surprised if the children get a little emotional or have a hard time adjusting to being back in school. This is very common after such a long break. Please be sure to get them back into their routine as soon as possible. And don’t forget to send the children to bed early. This is extremely important especially at this time of the year. The next couple of months will prove to be the most important for learning during this school year. This is the time of the year that it seems that “the lightbulb goes on” ! We will be starting new things such as a little printing, and trying to put words on paper to express ourselves. You will be shocked at what the children can do. If you see the children trying to print encourage them. Point out words they see all the time in places such as the supermarket, or department stores. Have fun with this.
Please check out the folders each evening and do our little assignments. Next week we will start printing a little. We will have more info on this in our newsletter for that week.
Finally, I would sincerely like everyone to pay attention to requests and information sent home each week. I understand that everyone makes mistakes, but it is upsetting when people do not really pay attention to the newsletter and Remind messages. People sometimes say I didn’t know about something when it was completely visible and noted on the weekly Newsletter, or sent home on Option C, or as a Remind message.
Sincerely,
Mrs. O’Brien

For the month of November we will be collecting: pasta, spaghetti sauce, grated cheese for the parish food bank. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for your support with the Thanksgiving items.
Reminders:
Lateness: It is very important that children be on time for school. It is really difficult for all concerned when the children arrive late. It is hard when a child arrives already a step behind everyone else for the day. It is also a big distraction to the other children who are already in class. The lateness is counted on option c and will be recorded on their permanent record cards that will travel with them through the grades.
Decade Day:This is just a fun day to bring the school community together and have a little fun. Our class will dress up like someone from the sixties. You do not have to go out and spend a lot of money on a costume. I suggest doing a Google search for 60’s costumes for kids, and hit images. You can see lots of ideas that you could do from items around the house.
Thanksgiving Projects: Please send in a nice size apple for our project by Friday. Put the apple in a brown bag with your child’s name on it.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO NOT DOUBLE PARK OR MAKE U-TURNS ON HAWTHORNE STREET.
A few things we will be learning:
Safety
Color words
Understanding Thanksgiving
Adding to patterns
Being thankful for all we have
Homework:
Monday- Please bring in your Turkey in Disguise Project by Thursday. Make this a fun project with your child and make sure they help in disguising the turkey.
Tuesday- Bring in a picture of something your family eats on Thanksgiving. Do not tape it in the copybook, but please put names on the picture. It is easy to use supermarket circulars for this.
Wednesday- Finish your Turkey in Disguise Project and bring it in tomorrow.
Thursday- Fill out the “My Pilgrim Story” and talk about it with you child. If there are sections you do not know just fill in what you are comfortable with.
Turkey in Disguise Project and a Heads Up for Decade Day.
Parents,
I am sending home this project a little early to give you a weekend to work on it with your child. I have done this for many years and it can be very fun. Your goal is to hide the turkey by making him into something else. If you need a little creative help just Google
Turkey in Disguise and you will see tons of ideas. You do not have to go crazy, just have fun!
It is due on Thursday the 18th.
Don’t forget to send in an apple by Friday the 19th. A golden delicious apple works great.
