Each student is required to read at least 500 book pages each trimester. These pages can be from one long book or across several shorter books. Students must prove they have read these pages by handing in a report for each book they are using to acquire the 500 pages. SSR reports may be handed in at any time. It is important that students make a plan of books they are going to read and are responsible for reading these books. This is practice for high school and beyond. It is also very important that students are in the practice of reading everyday. The best way to improve fluency and to develop as a reader and writer is reading.
Students may borrow a book from the classroom library with permission. A full list of the books students plan to read in the Third Trimester and the number of pages for each book needs to be submitted by Monday, March 16th. Failure to turn in this list will result in losing credit for SSR and will greatly impact the overall SSR grade, which is worth 20% of the Reading grade.
Students will receive a grade each week for their participation during SSR time in class. Grades will be calculated based on preparedness (bringing books to class) and focus (behavior during SSR time). The rubric for Weekly SSR In- Class Participation grades is below and is posted to Google Classroom. Please note that the rubric has changed from the first trimester to the second trimester.
Students must report on books they read during SSR in class. Students are expected to bring these books to class each day, and they will receive a weekly participation grade for preparedness and focus during SSR time.
Students must tell me when they finish one book and begin a another book. You should not turn a report on a book if you did not read the book in class or during SSR time. You will lose points for books you did not tell me you were reading. The rubric for SSR reports is below and is posted to Google Classroom.
Third Trimester SSR reports will be scheduled out depending on when we re-open the school. As of now, the first report (for a book that is at least 100 pages) is due Monday 3/30. The second will be due Monday 4/27, regardless of if our school builiding is open.
The report for each book must state:
Student’s name
Title
Author
Pages
Students need to write one paragraph summarizing the plot. It should be a five to ten sentence summary of the book. Focus on a few main events.
Students need to write a second paragraph recommendation. It should be three to five sentences focusing on what you liked about the book and if and to whom you would recommend the book.
In summary, your SSR report should be 2 paragraphs and 8-15 sentences. Reports are expected to follow these parameters.
Please remember that reports are to be typed, so correct Spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar are expected, as you can use Spellcheck to review your work.
